What’s It All About, Alfie?

Posted on by TheWriter

That’s really what science fiction, surrealism, heck, the search for knowledge is about, isn’t it?

That’s what Liquid Prisoner Comics is all about, too. What is going on? Since we haven’t the capacity to see all things in context, and know what it’s all about directly, we approach reality like a jigsaw puzzle, seeking to find the missing pieces that make the whole picture coherent.

In other words, it’s about ontology.

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ontology thusly:

Definition of ontology

1 : a branch of metaphysics concerned with the nature and relations of being
Ontology deals with abstract entities.
2 : a particular theory about the nature of being or the kinds of things that have existence.
“Ontology.” Merriam-Webster, Merriam-Webster, https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ontology

I teach in my classes that the abstract cannot be approached until one has laid a foundation of concrete items. “Facts, ma’m, just the facts,” someone named Friday once said.

That’s what a story in any form is presenting, the facts, and then from that comes some speculation about ontology. What is this thing we are experiencing, existence?

The entire oeuvre that is planned for Liquid Prisoner Comics is just that. I derived my name for the comic from one of Shakespeare’s sonnets. Shakespeare, among the world of writers, was one who seemed to have an inkling of “what’s it all about.”

So, beginning sometime after the new year, I begin laying out the pieces of the puzzle as I see it. (I’m doing the same in Blueboy Brown Comics, but in long form in a story that spans 150 years)

Do I see it as it is? If I do, can I mold it in a way that makes sense to others? Great poetry, like Dante’s Divine Comedy, fashions it lyrically. Once again, Shakespeare…Tolkien, some of Michelangelo’s greatest works, Rembrandt, they point the us in the right direction. I might and never find a way to convey that. But that is what art is all about. I must try.

Blueboy Brown Comics tries to do this in a manner that enables me to dig deep into what humanity is about. Liquid Prisoner Comics is all short stories; tales I have stored away and now plan to tackle as little puzzle pieces.
