Update on a Damaged Cartoonist

Mordecai Mordecai

Okay, Tree Punks, here’s the scoop. In January, everything was going swell, except for few bumps. Then on the 26th I took to my bed for a week. Thought I had covid or the flu (except no head or chest congestion). Got tested. Negative for both.

What happened was strong adverse reaction to a diabetic med my new doc added. Thought I was heading out the door. Stopped taking it and I immediately, within a few days, could get out of bed and more-or-less function. I’m on the mend two weeks after I wised up.

This put a real kink in Liquid Prisoner Comics #1. I have a Kickstarter pre-launch page set up and planned to get started by the end of the month. No such luck. Fortunately, before everything went dark I did the layouts for the pages and can work off those. Everything is paced correctly for a 36-page plus covers book. I took the downtime to do rewrite and fleshing out, so not everything was wasted. Even binge-watched the first season of Picard. Michael Chabon made the diff.

I’m back in the saddle again. Working on page 9-10 now. This thing damaged my drawing hand. I have a new “style” now to compensate. My devotion to Milt Caniff is coming in handy. Much looser, I guess. Thank God for digital display drawing tablets! Itty bitty marks on the tablet come off as sweeping gestures!

The thing above is somewhat like the “style” I had to come up with.
